Taibon Agordino

Taibon Agordino

Taibon, a small village in the Agordino at 628 meters, nestled between large mountains, was once a community of farmers and herders. For this reason, memories of the ancestral occupations of its inhabitants are expressed in simple architecture, which in some historic corners has preserved its dominant features, concentrating urbanization in favor of cultivated spaces.

On the valley floor, but also by encroaching on the forest if the slope allowed it, or on the sunnier and drier adjacent slopes, terracing was built where sowing could only be done after carrying the necessary soil on one’s back; here, in case of drought, the crops had to be irrigated by carrying water on one’s back.

Located at the entrance to the San Lucano Valley, Taibon stretches between Tegnas and the Cordevole. It sits at the confluence of the two streams, outlining the splendid landscape dominated by the Agnèr, the Pale di San Lucano, and the southern ridges of the Civetta, then expanding where the terrain allowed the settlement of the first colonization: with its various villages connected to the main town by a series of historic paths, pleasant to walk, which still survive, despite modern roads designed for cars and for those always in a hurry.

From the center of Taibon, after the bridge over the Cordevole, you reach S. Cipriano, with its 14th-century gem beneath the double rounded cusp of Framont; ascending the valley, you encounter the industrial area of Nogarola: from the Pastalegno paper mill to the modern and sophisticated technologies of eyewear; Listolade, heading towards the magnificent Civetta; going in the opposite direction is Coi de Peden, along the road with the ruins of the 19th-century fort of the same name; Peden, a crossroads of roads where, in 1929, the parish church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary of Sorrows was built; Villanova, with its linear architecture, born from the landslide of the Cime d’Ambrosogn; Forno di Val, an ancient forge site, guarding the entrance to the San Lucano Valley, dominated by the Agnèr and the Pale; Soccòl, higher up, nestled in the forest and open to the north; Campedel and Le Coste, in sight of Agordo; Serach, a glacial remnant; Col de Carera, with houses clinging to the steep slope, before closing the loop of the Viaz de le Vile.
